The Roscommon, and Houghton and Higgins Lakes area enjoys four distinct seasons, each with its own recreational pursuits and local festivals.
Summers are warm and bright with swimming, fishing, canoeing and boating on the lakes and AuSable River, and average temperatures ranging in the 60s. Highs can be up in the 80s in July; lows never drop below about 40.
Autumns are golden and orange in the woods and locals and visitors alike enjoy wildlife watching and hunting. Average September and October temperatures range from 55 to 45 degrees respectively; highs average around 68 to 55.
It starts cooling down at the end of October and warms up again at the end of March, with temperatures dropping as low as 9 degrees; highs average between 26 and 30 degrees in the coldest months. Everybody gets out their snowmobiles and cross country skis to make the most of the magnificent snowfall; an average of 19 inches in January, the coldest month.
Spring is wet, shiny and fresh and locals celebrate the thaw with several local events and enjoy the return of wildlife and birds.
